The symbol that we use to represent Om consists of three curves, a semicircle, and a dot.
The bottom curve represents our waking state. The middle curve signifies the dream state. The top curve suggests the state of deep sleep. The dot signifies the fourth state of consciousness, a pure consciousness of spirit that transcends space and time and that informs all the others. The semi circle at the top represents Maya and separates the dot from the other three curves. It signals to us that it is the illusion of Maya that can be an obstacle to realization of this Highest Mind.
